Formby beach

As my work requires travel, I long ago made a policy of using odd moments to make the most of being in a given place. So a few days ago I took a little walk along Formby Beach. The wellington clad dog walkers were rather bemused to see me stalking down the sand in a pin stripe suit but there were not,as you can see, very many of them. Sometime I do like to be alone.

In the UK generally these wind turbines are controversial. But I like them. they are like graceful ballerinas to me all moving gently at the same time. There are a little clutch of them at Kendal on the way up to my parents' home and when we come upon them I aways feel like they are giant ( but skinny) friends waving me welcome. There was I believe a time before City and Guilds when I could visit a place without feeling compelled to record texture...

but whilst I may have learned a lot about design, one thing baffles me still..... in such a large area of natural beauty, why do British people always choose to picnic in the car park?

glad I wasn't the only one wondering why oh why someone would erect their lawn chair right behind the cars! Bizzarre

we had a local comic strip with a character named (I think) Mrs. Melmac -- she would go camping in the national parks with her family and a complete array of cleaning products, bug sprays, etc. So I think the reason for the lawn chair in the parking lot is to avoid all contact with "nature" while the rest of the family goes for a walk on the beach...

Hi helen, I grew up in St.Helens too, my mum had a stall on the market for most of her life.I live on Crete now but am in UK for another few days. Went to St. H a week ago, hadn't been for about 5 years, it hasn't changed that much! I am a novice quilter along with Jude (cariadincreteblogspot) ;we live in the same village, plus a couple of others. Taking back loads of fabric and ideas and can't wait to get started.

Being alone can be quit relaxing sometimes, as a mother of two boys, believe me, I know.
Love your pictures, especially the windmills standing in the sea.

In Holland we used to have "highway tourism", people woudl park their cars next to a road, put chairs next to it and then just looked at the traffic. Never got that too....

BTW I love your blog.

Don't you know ... nature is wet and uncomfortable. Personally, and because generally I haven't travelled by car, I am the one with the damp rear as I've just enjoyed lunch sitting on the sand/stone/grass/branch.
